Karen Sikkenga is a partner at EMD Consulting Group. She has worked with EMD on many parks and gardens projects, including two current projects with Michigan local government entities. Her work includes business and strategic planning, financial analysis, organizational structures, benchmarking, governance, and business planning. Prior to joining EMD Consulting Group, she worked for over ten years as the associate director of Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum, where she oversaw the merger of those two institutions. There, she created a collaboration with the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Township and the Road Commission to build a multi-use trail using a creative funding model that leveraged state, local and Federal grant sources with individual and corporate giving.
She previously served as the Budget and Finance Manager of the College of Literature, Science & the Arts at the University of Michigan, overseeing a $500M annual budget and 60 academic departments and cultural institutions. She began her career as a senior managing consultant with Schumaker & Company and with the Harvey M. Rose Corporation, both firms that specialize in management consulting for local and state government entities. Her consulting practice focused on organizational structures, financial analysis and business planning.
She holds a Project Management Certification from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, a Masters of Public Administration from San Francisco State University, and a BA from the University of Michigan College of Literature Science & the Arts.
